The Director of Education is responsible for creating the vision and managing the offerings of the Dramatic Academy, Penobscot Theatre Company’s long-standing education component. Dramatic Academy currently consists of classes for youths and adults ages 4 and up. Classes include three fully-staged after school youth productions, adult acting, improv, Young Adult Conservatory, and two large-scale summer productions. The Director of Education is responsible for directing at least two productions, hiring teaching artists, choosing Dramatic Academy season and curriculum through show selection and class offerings, and developing an annual budget. The Director of Education is a senior staff position who reports to the Producing Artistic Director and chooses innovative methods to engage, recruit and manage a Parents’ Council and Education-focused board liaison. Dramatic Academy also includes state-wide in-school programming through its flagship Shakespeare-in-the-Schools program and a new, fully funded musical theatre program called Achieve. Position Start Date: late spring 2019.
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with general administrative and organizational work experience
Teaching license or at least four years of teaching experience
Knowledge of, experience in, and strong passion for theatre
Ability to develop a budget and adhere to strict spending allowances
Excellent interpersonal, leadership and problem-solving skills
Excellent skills of organization and follow-through
A very strong work ethic and a sense of urgency
Strong, creative problem solver
Excellent administrator who is keen on creating systems and building relationships
Ambitious artist with bold sensibilities and producing experience
Collaborator with excellent instincts
